The 1st South Wales Borderers battalion were part of 3 Brigade1st Division that had arrived in France in August 1914 and since then had been engaged in the Retreat from Mons and the Battles of the Marne and the Aisne.

At some stage Harry Crook was wounded and taken back to Le Mans where he died on 27th September, 1914. but as yet there is no information as to where and when he was wounded.
